Bare Bones Software Releases BBEdit 16.1
W3C HTML5 Checker Now Built in, New Language Playgrounds,
Highlight Patterns, Performance Improvements and More

NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. – November 3, 2026 – Bare Bones Software today announced the release and immediate availability of BBEdit® 16.1, the first feature update to the recently released major new version of its professional-strength text and code editor.

BBEdit 16.1 directly integrates the W3C HTML5 checker, and introduces new Highlight Patterns, new Language Playgrounds, a new internal language models architecture, built-in syntax coloring for five additional languages, fenced Markdown and more. In addition, BBEdit 16.1 includes performance improvements throughout along with myriad refinements to existing features designed to boost productivity and enhance the quality of life for anyone who uses BBEdit.

Language Playgrounds simplify adding support for languages not already supported by BBEdit 16 out of the box. Anyone running macOS 26 Tahoe or later can take advantage of Apple Intelligence to jumpstart the creation of a new language module. A new internal Declarative Language Modules (DLM) architecture enhances the expressiveness of customer-created language modules.

Now, the W3C HTML5 checker is integrated directly within BBEdit, on by default with support for the remote checker still available. The BBEdit 16.1 update adds built-in support for Kotlin, SystemVerilog, TaskPaper, JSONC and diff output. New Highlight Patterns can match a literal text search string or a Grep pattern in any open document and highlight it using the desired, configured color.

“BBEdit helps our customers get more done, faster; and in service of that we are perpetually seeking ways to make BBEdit even faster and more capable,” said Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software. “In this feature update, we’ve made significant improvements to performance and extensibility. The built-in HTML5 validator greatly speeds the process of writing standards-compliant HTML code; and the new Language Playgrounds feature — optionally backed by Apple Intelligence — significantly simplifies the process of developing plug-ins to add new language support to BBEdit’s already extensive suite of built-in languages. In addition to these foundational improvements, we’ve added many refinements and improvements to both new and old features.”

BBEdit 16.1 also includes fixes for specific reported issues, and is a recommended, free update to all registered customers with BBEdit 16. BBEdit 16 requires macOS Sonoma (14.0) or later. Detailed information on all of the new features and changes in BBEdit 16.1 can be found at:

BBEdit offers a generous evaluation model in which its full feature set is available for the first 30 days of use. At the end of the 30-day evaluation period, BBEdit will continue to run with a permanent feature set which includes its powerful editing capabilities, but not its web authoring tools or other exclusive features. BBEdit’s exclusive features may be re-enabled at any time with a purchased license. BBEdit 16 offers a fresh 30-day evaluation to everyone.
